Karen Mercedes, contralto, has been praised by The Washington Post for her “magnetic stage presence” and “voice of great expressive power”. She created roles in the world premieres of operas with Wolf Trap Opera Company (Epicene/Prison Matron John Musto's Volpone), the Reunion Music Society (Medea in Nancy Binns Reeds' The Blue Opera), and Opera Theatre of Northern Virginia (Mother in Michael Shapiro's Don Perlimplin and Belisa in the Garden), and in Rachel Sarrano Winograd’s musical Perfect (Rose/Hecate) at George Mason University, and she has also performed as guest artist in concert with Opera Bel Canto. Ms. Mercedes has played major roles in operettas and musicals with the Washington Savoyards, Victorian Lyric Opera Company, Maytime Light Opera Company, Montgomery Playhouse, Prince William Little Theatre, and in non-musical plays at Cedar Lane Stage and the Round House Theater. A frequent concert performer and recitalist, she has sung repertoire ranging from Bach, Vivaldi, and Handel to Barber, Kolinski, and Nyman in numerous concerts sponsored by the Friday Morning Music Club of Washington DC, is active in the FMMC Outreach Program, and was alto soloist in the FMMC performances of choral works by Michael Haydn and Anton Bruckner. She has also sung in other recital and concert series throughout the D.C. metro area, at The National Theater, Convergence, the Arts Club of Washington, the Renwick Gallery, and numerous other venues.
